1. The Slovak language is distinct from many other Slavic languages in that the accent, or stress, is usually placed on the first syllable of a word.
2. There are traces of the Slovak language in Latin documents from the 11th to the 15th century and in Czech from the 14th to the 16th century but the earliest known attempts to increase the use of Slovak came in the 17th and 18th centuries.
3. There are three major Slovak dialect groups: Eastern, Central, and Western.
4. In addition to Czech, several other languages influenced Slovak, such as Polish, Latin and Hungarian.
5. Slovak also has many loan-words from other languages such as English and Italian.
