1. The Bulgarian alphabet contains 30 letters, six of which are vowels.

2. The longest Bulgarian word has 39 letters ­– непротивоконституционствувателствувайте. It means ‘don’t act against the Constitution’.

3. Bulgarians celebrate the Bulgarian language, script, and culture on May 24 each year. The Bulgarian Orthodox Church also celebrates Cyril and Methodius, the brothers who are attributed with inventing the Cyrillic script, on the same day.

4. Bulgarian was the first of the Slavic languages to be written down.

5. In total, there are around 15 million Bulgarian speakers in the world.
