For those that don’t know the ins and outs of ISO certification, we’ve highlighted some key points below:
ISO 9001:2015 certification
This ISO Standard specifies general requirements for a quality management system, for organisations of any size, type and sector. ISO 9001:2015 Standard required Surrey Translation Bureau to address seven key areas to achieve continual improvement and these are:

Auditing STB on the above clauses, the ISO inspector was pleased with the effectiveness of STB’s ability to monitor and control their key processes, commenting that the ongoing review by the Company’s quality representatives continue to ensure that operations at Surrey Translation Bureau run smoothly and processes remain up to date, efficient and effective when it comes to carrying out customer requirements.
ISO 17100:2015 certification
The ISO 17100:2015 Standard lists requirements for a translation service provider’s operations, resources, and other processes that are essential for the delivery of a quality service. Surrey Translation Bureau’s certification to ISO 17100:2015 covers how a client’s needs will be met, at a consistently high quality, each and every time.
While undergoing the assessment for this Standard, STB was evaluated and commended on:
• How STB defines and comprehends their translation and related service;
• The professional competences of the in-house team, including translators, revisers and project managers, as well as the quality of its external suppliers;
• Both pre-production and production processes, including quotations, handling of client information, translation deliveries and the project management of client requests;
• Post-production processes, such as feedback management and closing administration of projects and after-sales.
On completing STB’s audit for the ISO 9001:2015 and ISO 17100:2015 Standards, Lucinda Parfitt, Director at Quality Certification Systems International, commented: “I thoroughly enjoyed conducting the audit and can tell that the staff at STB take their systems very seriously and continually improve them. Well done.”
ISO 18587:2017 certification
As the first internationally-recognised ISO Standard for post-editing of machine translation output (PEMT), ISO 18587:2017 defines the competences and qualifications of anyone delivering post-editing work, as well as clarifies the process related to offering a post-editing service.
STB offers two post-editing service levels in line with the definitions outlined in its ISO 18587 certification: light post-editing and full post-editing.
To successfully renew certification to this Standard for 2023–2024, the Company was assessed on:
• How it defines and understands concepts related to machine translation (MT) and post-editing;
• A clear procedure in relation to every stage of the post-editing process, from assessment of the output to delivery;
• The level of professional competency and qualification of STB’s post-editing team.
